The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.The majority of mechanically ventilated critically ill patients require sedation to facilitate tolerance to mechanical ventilation. Substance abuse impacts negatively on sedation management because patients with substance abuse have higher tolerance to sedatives and narcotics. THe hypothesis is that substance abuse results in increase frequency of adverse events.
