This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Little is known about the effects of hydration on labor. This study is a multicenter, randomized controlled trial to determine the relationship between intravenous hydration and progress in labor in nulliparous women without other complications during the present pregnancy. Women will be randomized to one of three hydrations groups (125 cc/hr with limited oral hydration, 250 cc/hr with limited oral hydration, and ad libitum oral hydration with minimal intravenous hydration). Delivery outcomes will include length of labor, mode of delivery, and complication rates. Additionally, we plan to assess satisfaction with the labor and delivery experience is our three study groups.
