This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of oral L-Arginine (3 per day) on insulin sensitivity/resistance in patients with peripheral arterial disease. This is a open-label continuation to the NO PAIN Study #736. It will involve additional blood samples. Our preclinical studies indicate that ADMA may cause insulin resistance. We hypothesize that L-Arginine administration will reverse the adverse effect of ADMA on insulin sensitivity.
