This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. There are three parts to this proposal. Part 1: The objective is to compare the efficacy of two breast milk expression patterns on the initiation of lactation in mothers of very low birth weight (VLBW) infants (< 1500 gm infants who are < 30 weeks gestation). Part 2: The objective is to investigate the comfort and efficacy of 6 different breast shields in mothers with established lactation who delivered VLBW infants. Part 3: This part of the study will investigate compositional changes in breast milk in these same mothers who are pumping, breastfeeding or doing a combination of both through the 57th postpartum day.
