The overall objectives of this research project are the further elucidation of the roles that three factors play in the assessment of control and/or the pathophysiology hemoglobin (HbAl, 2) residual beta cell function as measured by connecting peptide immunoreactivity (CPI), and 3) dietary fiber. Initial focus will be placed on the establishment of sensitive and reproducible techniques for the measurement of 1 and 2 above. The clinical significance of HbAl will be assessed in detail and an attempt to establish its correlation with residual beta cell function. The effect of dietary fiber on the control of IDM in children will be assessed concurrently over short term (initially) and longer trials, utilizing the above and other techniques available in our laboratories.
