This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The specific aims of the study are the following:1) To test the safety and efficacy of buprenorphine vs methadone for the treatment of opioid-dependent women during pregnancy;2) To make recommendations to the FDA for approval of buprenorphine use among opioid-dependent pregnant women,3) Provide science-based evidence that can be used by federal regulatory agencies, medical societies, and social agencies to better treat this special population of opioid-dependent patients and should impact significantly on their clinical treatment beyond the benefits afforded to the neonates of the pregnant mothers.
