This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This study will conduct a number of biochemical and cellular experiments on the effect of particulate matter (PM) fractions on GM-CSF synthesis by HBEC, such as the identification of MAPK/Raf pathways involved in GM-CSF expression. The effects of cytokines (IL4, 5, 13 and TNF-alpha) in increasing the release of GM-CSF also will be evaluated. The possible involvement of specific chemical properties of the PM in triggering GM-CSF will be studied. Since GM-CSF is involved in dendritic cell maturation, the study will also address whether PM causes changes in lung dendritic cells. This study has been initiated on the GCRC, and subjects continue to be enrolled. Results are not yet available.
