This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.This is a pilot study of administration of aerosol Interferon-gamma (IFN-g), an antifibrotic cytokine, to patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). A recent, small, Phase I study of subcutaneous IFN-g has shown promising results in patients with IPF. The study will enroll 10 patients with IPF who have failed conventional therapy into a trial which will administer aerosol IFN-g three times per week for 12 weeks. The main objective is to evaluate the efficacy of aerosol delivery of IFN-g to patients with IPF, which will be evaluated by a deposition study. In addition, each patient will undergo pre- and post-treatment bronchoalveolar lavage which will be analyzed for various cytokines and other markers of inflammation. Clinical parameters will be monitored through two dyspnea questionnaires to be filled out pre- and post-treatment.
