This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Over the last decade there has been increased recognition that a subset of obese patients report binge eating episodes similar to those seen in patients with bulimia nervose (BN). In order to adequately design nutritional and behavioral interventions to treat this disorder, a good understanding of energy intake and expenditure in this specific population is essential. The research described in this proposal will attempt to contribute to the current body of knowledge regarding binge eating disorder (BED) by using four state-of-the-art techniques to assess energy intake and energy expenditure in BED and non-BED obese subjects: 1) structured psychiatric interviews, 2) random 24-hour dietary recalls, 3) laboratory observation of eating behavior, 4) two weeks of daily self-reported dietary intake records, validated by the use of total energy expenditure assessed using the doubly labeled water technique. The laboratory observation of binge eating, administration of DLW, and collection of data necessary for the calculation of TEE will all occur during a two night inpatient stay at the GCRC.
