This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This proposal is innovative in that we are attempting to prevent beta cell autoimmunity. Having an intervention that is extremely safe and wil not involve use of any agents not already available as food supplements (and are already available in some infant formulas), wuold be of incalculable value. It is unlikely that other approaches (other than nutiritional interventions) would be feasible in pregnancy and/or infancy to try to prevent the development of autoimmunity.
