This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. We hypothesize that pulmonary function, weight, protein catabolism and acute markers of inflammation will show greater improvement over the course of 7 days in hospitalized CF patients treated intensively with insulin therapy. We propose a pilot study of CF patients age 12 and older, hospitalized for acute pulmonary exacerbation and experiencing hyperglycemia, to be treated with intensive insulin therapy by CSII for 7 days. These data will be used to determine the sample size needed for a larger, definitive study to assess the practicality of the protocol and patient willingness to participate.
