This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Although the major mission of the PACTG has traditionally been to conduct clinical trials, at this time in the epidemic of HIV-infection in child-bearing women, it is both appropriate and necessary for the PACTG to recruit pregnant women into a non-interventional, analytic, epidemiologic study in order to methodically collect clinical and laboratory data from the women and their infants. In this way, the PACTG can achieve the important aims of evaluating managment of HIV-infected women during pregnancy and determining the safety and effectiveness of ART and other interventions intended to prevent vertical transmission and/or improve maternal health. PACTG 367 has demonstrated that data can be collected prospectively from women and their infants receiving care at PACTG sites. Furthermore, these data can be analyzed on an ongoing basis to provide important information used not only for the design of clinical trials, but also for modification of clinical care.
