The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Three million reports about 5 million children were made to Child Protective Services (CPS) in the US in the year 2000 because someone thought they were being neglected or abused. Last year at Boston Medical Center (BMC) over 350 CPS reports were made about children seeking medical care here. The BMC child protection team (CPT), a multidisciplinary group of medical and other professionals from BMC and Boston CPS, is responsible for tracking and following up on these cases. If removal of the child or children from the home and placement into foster care is not necessary, social services are offered. If these services are declined by the family, CPS closes the case. However, this is not truly the end of the relationship with CPS because about one-third of these families are re-reported to CPS for other instances of neglect or abuse within 18 months.
