This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This study aims to determine whether midlife and older female sexual trauma survivors experience a phenomenon our research team has named Late-Onset Stress Symptomatology, or LOSS. LOSS is defined here as a phenomenon among midlife and older women who (a) experienced sexual trauma during childhood and/or early adulthood; (b) have functioned relatively well throughout the course of their lives; but (c) begin to experience symptoms, memories or reminiscences related to their past trauma as they encounter the changes and challenges of the aging process. We plan to conduct individual interviews and focus group discussions with female sexual trauma survivors aged 55 and older. Data from this exploratory study will help guide future research questions with the goal of guiding appropriate health services for this underserved population.
