About one third of the North American population is overweight. Increases in fat weight impart a risk for metabolic complications and for atherosclerosis. In recent years it has been shown that menopause is associated with marked increases in fat weight, and overweight appears to be a gender-specific risk for coronary heart disease. The purpose of this study is to determine whether fat weight and fat distribution have a major impact on plasma levels of free fatty acids in post menopausal women. The results will be compared to pre menopausal women. Levels of plasma lipids and lipoproteins, hormones, and apolipoproteins will be measured. Subjects also will have measurement of free fatty acids, glucose tolerance testing and anthropometry.
