This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This project is the initial segment of a two-part study. We will screen high-risk participants with an oral glucose tolerance test. The individuals with normal glucose tolerance will be asked to participate in our other GCRC SPID 0646. The individuals with impaired glucose tolerance will be asked to participate in this project. The primary objective of this investigation is to determine whether the improvement of insulin sensitivity following treatment with a thiazolidine drug is associated with reduced lipid stores in cardiac and skeletal muscle in individuals with impaired glucose tolerance. This study has received an exemption for IND from the FDA.
