Type 2 diabetes is imposing a major burden on the health care system worldwide, especially in India, China and U.S., the 'top 3' countries in the number of people with diabetes. Obesity plays an important role in the development of insulin resistance. However, the prevalence of diabetes among Asian Indians and Chinese does not match their low degree of obesity when compared with Caucasians. We have previously demonstrated that Asian Indian men have higher insulin resistance compared to Caucasians when matched for age, body fat and fat distribution, and this difference in susceptibility is related to the adipose tissue metabolites. In this proposal we propose to extend the study to other ethnic groups. We are going to test whether the susceptibility to insulin resistance is different among different ethnic groups, and to test the metabolic determinants of this difference in susceptibility.
