This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Investigate the neurophysiological factors that allow certain individuals to show a relative resistance to the detrimental effects of sleep loss and to explore this resistance across tasks of varying degrees of difficulty. Examine cognitive performance and cerebral activation differences in two groups of subjects who naturally show a differential need for sleep: habitual long-sleepers and habitual short-sleepers, with further comparisons to normal controls in an independently executed companion study.
