This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. We are interested in examining maternal responses to external stimuli during pregnancy. With this study we plan to examine memory, attention and tactile sensitivity during pregnancy and the post-partum period. This will be accomplished with simple, standardized memory and attention tests and measurement of evoked potentials during cognitive tasks. Further, we will measure psychosocial stress and emotion with a simple psychosocial interview instrument, biological stress markers with blood pressure and assays of plasma and salivary hormones, and tactile sensitivity with a two-point discrimination test. Last, we will measure pregnancy-induced changes in facial morphology with photographs of particiapant's faces at each visit. This protcol qualifies for expedited review with the protocol procedures falling under categories 2, 4 and 7.
