This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. We will examine whether impaired microvascular responses to exercise (EX) are associated with Type 2 DM with the presence of microvascular complications. EX is normally met with a 2-stage vascular response. The 1st occurs at low intensity EX and involves the expansion of capillary volume. The 2nd phase, with more intense EX, involves increases in total blood flow to the exercising muscle. We believe that if DM or insulin resistance disrupts the first, then tissue perfusion patterns may be disturbed over time.
