This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The prevalence of diabetes in Asian Americans has been estimated to be between 10-20%, far exceeding the national average. While Asian Americans have been shown to be leaner yet more insulin resistant (IR) than Caucasians, it is not known whether IR in Asian Americans is associated with higher degree of vascular dysfunction. This study is designed to assess the relationship between insulin resistance and endothelial dysfunction in relation to adiposity. We plan to test the hypothesis that insulin resistance is associated with defective endothelium-dependent vasodilation in Chinese Americans.
