This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that patients with chronically reduced sleep amounts have (1) increased pain perception and (2) skill learning impairments compared to healthy controls. Fifteen patients with insomnia and 15 gender- and age-matched healthy volunteers between the ages 21 to 60 years will be enrolled in this study. Subjects will be screened, and if inclusion/exclusion criteria are met, they will be given the sleep log and actigraph. Then subjects will be seen on the GCRC for two consecutive days for somatosensory (pain) testing and skill learning sessions.
