This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purposes of this proposal are to (1) establish the primacy of phosphate loading, even without hyperphosphatemia, in the development of secondary hyperparathyroidism and (2) develop pilot data of a treatment strategy that manipulates phosphate loading in an effort to ameliorate the development of secondary hyperparathyroidism by increasing endogenous calcitriol levels, which itself along with decreased phosphate levels may be potential survival factors.
