The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.The purpose of the study is to determine the prevalence of osteoporosis in women and men with disordered eating, as well as identify some of the major factors that affect bone density and bone loss in individuals with disordered eating. Disordered eating can cause thinning of the bones (a decrease in bone density). Significant thinning of the bones is called osteopenia or osteoporosis, depending on its severity. Sometimes thinning can be severe enough to cause breaks and fractures of the bones. It is not known what causes the bones to thin in people with disordered eating. We plan to screen from 500 to 1650 women for this study and 200 to 325 men. This study consists of one visit, which will last approximately three hours. To our knowledge, there have been no previous studies of predictors of disordered eating in boys or men. The athlete triad in boys and men would consist of disordered eating, hypogonadism (testosterone deficiency), and osteopenia.Research of the determinants of osteopenia has been limited to a few individual factors and different skeletal sites. We hypothesize that there is a complex interrelationship between food intake, exercise, hormones, and weight which determines osteopenia at the different skeletal sites, and further that these determinants differ among the various skeletal sites.
