This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Early detection of risk for aspiration in patients with acute stroke and other acquired neurogenic disorders reduces morbidity from pneumonia and decreases associated costs. We developed a two-part evidence based swallow screening tool (MGH-SST) for use by nurses in neuroscience inpatients prior to introduction of an oral diet or medications. We propose a validation study on 100 consecutive patients in which findings on the MGH-SST are compared with the gold standard Fiberoptic Endoscopic Swallowing Evaluation.
