This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of the study is to determine the effect of TNF-alpha blockade in patients with Metabolic Syndrome, as defined by the NCEP criteria. Previous studies have suggested a potential 'adipo-vascular' axis, the initiation of inflammation from adipocyte derived cytokins which trigger the development of atherosclerosis. We hypothesize TNF-alpha blockade in patients with metabolic syndrome will positively affect inflammatory markers of cardiac risk such as endothelial function and glucose tolerance.
