Abstract

The aims of this study are: 1) To identify SCD children who are at higher risk for stroke using TCD sonography. 2) To determine if chronic transfusion prevents first time clinical stroke in children with SCD who have been found to be at high risk by TCD. 3) To determine whether transfusion is also associated with lower incidence for asymptomatic (silent) cerebal infarction as determined by sequential MRIs of the brain. 4) To reduce death and disability in young patients with SCD through primary stroke prevention.
