This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to find proteins in the blood that can be used to indicate disease. Subjects are being asked to participate in this study because they may have a condition that can be identified by the proteins in your blood. Specifically, people who have conditions that effect their kidneys may be at risk of developing cachexia, a wasting of body tissue, as the function of the kidneys decreases. Zn-alpha-2-glycoprotein is a protein that builds up in the blood of people with kidney disease and by measuring this protein researchers may be able to determine the extent of cachexia that occurs.
