This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The primary objective is to compare changes in weight and metabolic-syndrome parameters in overweight or obese preadolescents or adolescents in response to a lifestyle intervention including two servings of ready-to-eat cereal compared to the lifestyle intervention without cereal consumption. Primary endpoint is mean changes from baseline in body weight (absolute and percentage) at 6 and 12 weeks in BMI Z-score from baseline to 12 weeks for RTE cereal and control groups. Secondary end points are: mean changes from baseline in body weight at each clinic visit; mean change from baseline in waist circumference at 6 and 12 weeks; mean change from baseline in body compesition (DEXA); mean changes from baseline in serum lipid levels at 6 and 12 weeks; Incidence of side-effects in both treatment groups.
