This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Periodontal disease and dental caries are ubiquitous in the population. Recent literature has linked oral inflammatory conditions to elevations in circulating inflammatory mediators. In addition, inflammatory mediators such as C-reactive protein have been linked to cardiovascular disease, and a reduction of CRP has been shown to decrease the risk of MI and Stroke. The investigators propose to evaluate the levels of three inflammatory mediators, CRP, IL-6, and fibrinogen, in patients with periodontal disease and dental caries who are having all their teeth removed prior to denture construction. They plan to follow these patients for one year with periodic re-evaluations with venipuncture to establish whether or not there is a decrease in these inflammatory mediators after elimination of oral disease.
