This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. To expose the possibility that the mechanism which polyphenol-rich cocoa influences renal hemodynamics involves activation of intrarenal nitric oxide synthase. To make that assessment, we are measuring the metabolic products of nitric oxide synthesis in urine and blood, and assessing the influence on the renal blood supply of blocking nitric oxide synthesis with L-NAME. This is an investigator initiated study.
