This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of atorvastatin (Lipitor) and rosubastatin (Crestor), FDA approved drugs commonly prescribed by doctors to lower cholesterol, on certain functions of platelets, white blood cells, and blood flow regulations by arteries. This is important because we are looking at ways to more effectively prevent atherosclerosis and heart disease. Many studies have demonstrated that these drugs are effective at reducing inflammation and stabilizing plaques. We are interested in better understanding the effects of these medicines on inflammation and the mechanism by which they act. This is an investigator initiated study.
