This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of atorvastatin (Lipitor) and rosuvastatin (Crestor), FDA approved drugs commonly prescribed by doctors to lower cholesterol, on certain function of platelets, white blood cells, and blood flow regulations by arteries. This is important because we are looking at ways to more effectively prevent atherosclerosis and heart disease. Many studies have demonstrated that these drugs are effective at reducing inflammation and stabilizing plaques. We are interested in better understanding the effects of these medicines on inflammation and the mechanism by which they act. This is an investigator initiated study.
