[from CRISP website (edited)] Sleep disordered breathing (SDB), is a widespread but under-diagnosed condition that may have a role in causing hypertension, cardiovascular, and cerebrovascular disease, hypersomnolence, and lower daytime functioning. However, findings thus far are not enough for determining rational clinical and public health responses. The long-term objective of this project is to determine how much morbidity and mortality from SDB could potentially be reduced with prevention or treatment of SDB. Because SDB is a chronic and severe condition and the health effects may take years to develop, samples over a period of time are essential. Also, SDB is high in middle age, but the long-term outcomes are conditions primarily occuring in older age ( 60 years), requiring data on individuals as they move from middle to older age to validly estimate the morbidity risks attributable to SDB. Currently these data are lacking; this research proposed addresses the gap in understanding the burden of undiagnosed SDB in adults. We will investigate the role of SDB in oreclinical cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease (CVD/stroke), incident CVD/stroke, mortality and in chronic daytime dysfunction. We will also investigate changes in SDB occurrence and its effects with aging from middle to older age. We are doing research on a subsample of 500 men and women who will transition from middle to older age ( 60 years) during the 5 years of the study. All minority participants enrolled in the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study (WSCS) will be recruited for both exams, regardless of age. We will assess the independent contribution of SDB to preclinical and overt CVD/stroke, hypersonmolence, cognitive function, occupational injury, depression and quality of life.
