This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This study is designed to test the effect of the intestinal hormone GLP-1 to control insulin secretion in healthy persons and those with diabetes. To do this research volunteers will have insulin levels measured after meals on two occasions. The effect of GLP-1 will be determined by giving a blocker of GLP-,1 called exendin-(9-39, in one of the studies. By comparing insulin secretion with and without GLP-1 blockade, the effect of GLP-1 can be estimated from the difference in the two studies.
