This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The objective of this study is to conduct a longitudinal project focused on low-income African American preschoolers. We will investigate the relation between parental feeding restriction and child eating in this population. We will also investigate the relation between parental feeding restriction and child.
Our aims are (1) to determine if parent feeding restriction is related to child eating and child weight in low-income African American preschoolers and (2) to examine the effect of parent feeding restriction on child eating and child weight in low-income African American preschoolers. A longitudinal research design that includes two assessments (time 1 and 2), 12 months apart, will be used to address these aims. Data for each time point will be collected during a 3 hour study visit to the General Clinical Research Center at Cincinnati Children's and by phone within a two week period of the study visit at Cincinnati Children's. Pearson-product moments will be conducted to investigate the relation between restriction and child eating or the relation between restriction and child weight status. Additionally, a multivariate regression will be conducted to investigate whether restriction predicts child eating or child weight status at time 2. Findings will be used to inform the development of prevention and intervention approaches that focus on changing parent-child feeding behaviors as a means to reduce the increasing prevalence of obesity in low-income preschool children.
