This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to understand why some pregnant women develop high blood sugars during and after pregnancy. This condition is called insulin resistance and it may be associated with the risk of developing diabetes mellitus as an adult. We plan to measure the degree of insulin resisitance and insulin secretion during a glucose tolerance test in which the subject will receive a special mixture of glucose. We are going to relate that measurement to a number of different metabolic markers. We think that the markers may help determine individuals who are insulin resistant.
