Osteoporosis and associated fractures are a major public health concern because of related morbidity, disability, decreased quality of life and mortality. Unfortunately, ignorance about prevention or treatment of osteoporosis in male patients on androgen deprivation for prostate cancer is widespread among health professionals, patients and the public at large. For example, the majority of American men view osteoporosis solely as a woman's disease' according to a Gallup survey published by the National Osteoporosis Foundation (1996). Health professionals too have not taken preventive measures due to lack of research and evidence in this area. In postmenopausal women, pharmacological options for treating and/or preventing osteoporosis include Calcium carbonate/ vitamin D combinations, estrogen replacement therapy, and oral bisphosphonate therapy among others. Similarly evidence suggests that in osteoporosis secondary to chronic glucocorticoid therapy and thyroid replacement therapy in male and female patients, treatment with intermittent intravenous bisphosphonate (pamidronate) therapy is effective.
