This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Changing the diet to a high monounsaturated fat/low carbohydrate (HFLC) diet in diabetics with moderate hypertriglyceridemia (fasting triglycerides 300 800 mg/dl) will decrease the fasting triglycerides (TG) more than changing to a low fat/high carbohydrate (LFHC) diet.
Aim 1 is to determine the change in fasting TG in diabetics with moderate hypertriglyceridemia treated with a LFHC or a HFLC diet. Changing the diet to a HFLC diet in diabetics with moderate hypertriglyceridemia will decrease postprandial TG and triglyceride rich lipoproteins (TRL) after a standard fat meal more than changing to a LFHC diet.
Aim 2 is to determine the change in postprandial TG and TRL after a standard fat meal in diabetics with moderate hypertriglyceridemia treated with a LFHC diet or a HFLC diet. Approximately 14 subjects, male or female 18 75 years of age, with type 2 diabetes and fasting triglycerides 300 - 800 mg/dl will be randomized. Following the screening visit, subjects will be initially randomized to either LFHC or HFLC weight maintenance diets. The LFHC diet will consist of 30% fat (10% monounsaturated, 10% saturated, 10% polyunsaturated), 55% CHO and 15 % protein. The HFLC diet will be isocaloric and provide 40% CHO, 45% fat (25% monounsaturated, 10% saturated, 10% polyunsaturated fat) and 15% protein.
