This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This protocol will examine risk factors for cardiovascular disease, subclinical atherscerlosis by carotid ultrasound and cardiovascular events in HIV infected women on highly active antiretroviral therapy. Women who are part of the Women's Interagency HIV study (WIHS) undergo carotid ultrasound now and again in 4 years to assess the role of carotid intimal thickening in predicting heart disease in this cohort. The GCRC is utilized to obtain a fasting lipid panel, glucose and insulin levels as part of a biomarker panel for heart disease on a subset of women who were not fasting at their core WIHS visit.
