This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.This study is for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and will be having surgery as part of their treatment.One common side effect of breast cancer surgery is pain and swelling in the arm or hand on the side of the surgery. This is called lymphedema. Research shows that lymphedema can affect a woman's ability to complete daily activities, as well as her emotions and overall quality of life (how someone is doing).The purpose of this study is to look at the effects of an education program versus education plus a special exercise program on whether or not a woman gets lymphedema. The study will also look at quality of life in women treated for breast cancer.
