The Administrative Core provides infrastructure support for overall direction of the research programs, appropriate fiscal management of the program, and liaison with other entities. The Corehas the following functions: i) Oversight of Research Program. This will be accomplished by monthly meetings of the Steering Committee of all investigators. Wewill invite others to join these meetings where appropriate. In particular, we will involve leading investigators in aging research at the University of Pennsylvania such as Drs. Virginia Lee, John Trojanowski, Harry Ischiropoulos and Nancy Bonini, leading investigators in animal sleep and behavioral research such as Dr. GaryAston-Jones, Dr. Leszek Kubin Dr. Steve Thomas, Dr. Marcos Frank as well as our biostatistical colleague, Dr. Thomas TenHave. These individuals will form our Internal Advisory Group. To complement these efforts, we have established an External Advisory Group that will hold a one-day meeting every 18 months at the University ofPennsylvania to review progress in each project and core and discuss future research plans. This group will be chaired by Dr. E. Mignot (Stanford University) and consist of the following members: Carol Barnes, Ph.D. (University of Arizona), Daniel Gardner, Ph.D. (Cornell), Steven Helfand, M.D. (Brown University), Frank LaFerla, Ph.D. (University of California, Irvine), and Larry D. Sanford, Ph.D. (Eastern Virginia Medical School); 2) Preparation of Manuscripts/Maintenance of Records. This Core will be responsible for preparation of manuscripts and for maintaining all records relevant to the Program Project. The Core will also assist investigators in preparation of audio-visual material; 3) Financial Management of the Program. This Core will be responsible for financial management of this Program project. It will maintain financial records, do all purchasing and provide investigators with monthly reports about expenses from their component of the program. This Core will be responsible for developing financial reports for the National Institutes of Health in collaboration with the Office of Research Services; 4) Liaison with Other Entities. The Core will facilitate smooth interaction between the Program Project and other relevant entities at the University of Pennsylvania. These include the following: Institute on Aging; Department of Neuroscience, Department of Medicine, Department of Biology; Institute for Neurological Sciences, as well as the other various academic departments and schools involved in our efforts; and 5) Seminar Series and Training Program. The Core staff will play its role in organizing both a sleep lecture series where our postdoctoral fellows and others present their work, a Journal Club, as well as a seminar series with outside speakers. The Core is involved in organizingan annual one-day Sleep Research Retreat in whichfaculty, trainees and staff involved in this Program Project participate.
