Public Health Relevance

There are dramatic variations in patterns of healthy aging between countries. For instance, older Americans have been shown to have much higher prevalence of many major chronic conditions, such as stroke, heart disease, and diabetes, compared to their European counterparts. The explanations for these differences are unclear. This research will focus on the role of differences in social contacts with families, friends, work, and community in explaining cross-national differences in the epidemiology of aging.
