This Administrative Core has two objectives: 1) to provide all projects and cores with centralized supportand guidance, and 2) to provide pilot funds to investigators at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and MDAnderson Cancer Center (MDACC) to broaden hES research in the Texas Medical Center (TMC). Forthe first objective, the Core will provide all administrative support to ensure the program continues to behighly interactive and runs smoothly. Support will include organization of a monthly meeting which allproject investigators, trainees, and Core personnel will attend. In addition, an annual advisory meetingwill include a comprehensive review of our program by three internal and three external board members. The overall goal of the second objective is to stimulate more hES research in the TMC by providing pilotfunds to investigators wishing to initiate hES work. We plan to fund up to three new pilot projects eachyear, providing $50,000 of funds as well as full access to our Cores. The pilot project applications will besolicited throughout BCM and MDACC, and competitively selected by our executive and advisorycommittees. For the initial round of pilot projects, we selected three investigators, and short descriptionsof their projects are included. These projects include 1) investigation of the role in hES pluripotency of anew transcription factor identified in oocytes, 2) investigation of the role of metabolic coupling in hESpluripotency, and 3) the role of chromatin remodeling complexes in BMP signaling in hES cells. Thus, this Administrative Core will provide centralized support and to all projects and seek to broadlystrengthen and expand hES research in the TMC.
