The Core houses a repository of brain specimens from patients who died with HIV-1 infection and AIDS. This consists largely of pediatric cases, with a small number of adult cases aswell. There is currently paraffin-embedded tissue from 79 cases, with specimens snap frozen in isopentane cooled with liquid nitrogen and stored at -80 degrees C from 24 of these cases, with many collected within 12 hours of death. Because of the success of treatment of pediatric AIDS with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), the number of deaths due to HIV-1 has fallen, with a consequent diminution in the number of cases added to the Brain Bank over the last few years. Any cases that do come to post mortem examination, with proper consent for autopsy, will be added to the Brain Bank, with an expected maximum of three cases per year (see letter from consultant, Dr. George McSherry, of the Division of Pediatric Allergy, Immunology and Infectious Diseases, and of the pediatric AIDS center at University Hospital, Newark). Inthe autopsy protocol, the brain is divided in half, with samples taken from over 20 regions for snap freezing from one half, while over 50 regions are sampled for paraffin embedding from the other half.
