Title: Testing an Optimal Model of Patient-Centered Cancer CareProject Leader: Edward H. Wagner, MD, MPHProject Summary: The early phases of cancer care have received relatively little research attention. Theperiod of time surrounding the diagnosis and shortly thereafter involves information seeking, momentousdecision-making, and navigation among multiple providers at a time of intense emotional stress. The purposeof this 5-year proposal is to develop and test the efficacy in a randomized, controlled clinical trial of anOncology Nurse Care Management (ONCM) program to support cancer patients early in their course. Ourprimary goal is to assess the impact on quality of life, quality of care, and other outcomes of an ONCMprogram for newly diagnosed breast, colorectal, and lung cancer patients. The intervention will be implementedand evaluated among enrollees of Group Health (GH). This innovative strategy to enhance cancer care willsupport the overall Clinical Communication Research Center goal to test optimal structures and processeswithin clinical systems that facilitate patient-centered communication and coordination. To study the outcomes,we will administer questionnaires to all study patients and their respective clinicians at baseline, and 4 and 12months after baseline.
