This proposal continues the development of the Nevada IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (NV INBRE) initiated in 2005. During the previous funding periods we established an administrative network linking the major research and education institutions in Nevada, we supported researchers and statewide research service cores, and we increased the science and technology knowledge of Nevada's workforce through a Biomedical Student Pipeline that mentored students, including students under-represented in biomedical science. In this renewal proposal, we build on these accomplishments by developing new programs supporting research investigating Cell Growth and Differentiation, by expanding our student development pipeline, and by bringing new institutions into our network. The project will (1) implement a Developmental Research Project (DRP) and Pilot Grant (PG) Program to increase research investigating Cell Growth and Differentiation, (2) continue to provide resources and services provided by the Bioinformatics Core, and (3) expand the Biomedical Student Pipeline creating the Outreach / Diversity / Pipeline (ODP) Program to prepare students enrolled in 2- and 4-year programs for education and careers in research investigating Cell Growth and Differentiation. In addition, the NV INBRE will renovate laboratory space at Nevada State College to create a facility that will support authentic research investigating Cell Growth and Differentiation by their undergraduate students and faculty. All activities will be coordinated by an Administrative Core with direct responsibilit for compliance, managing program funding, facilitating communication in the network, overseeing all research activities, coordinating training and mentoring for faculty and students, and performing assessment, tracking, and evaluation.

Public Health Relevance

This project continues the development of the Nevada IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (NV INBRE) initiated in 2005. The project will link all Nevada public universities and colleges and the state' only private liberal arts college in a network to share expertise and resources. We will increase biomedical research in the state by funding new research projects, supporting a Bioinformatics Core that provides computational power and support for genome analysis, and mentoring students enrolled in 2- and 4-year programs for education and careers in research investigating Cell Growth and Differentiation. In addition, the NV INBRE will renovate laboratory space at Nevada State College to enable students to participate in biomedical research projects.
