While some studies have looked at the prevalence of the problem, there is a lack of literature on the difference in prevalence amongst various ethnicities. This study aims to determine the prevalence of chronic pelvic pain, non-cyclic pelvic pain lasting greater then 6 months, amongst various ethnic groups in the state of Hawaii. Non-pregnant women from the age of 18-50 years old will be randomly surveyed by the Hawaii Household Survey (conducted by SMS) for the year of 2004-2005. The Hawaii Household Survey is a yearly survey conducted by the Department of Health of the State of Hawaii. The survey is conducted by a third party company (SMS) and surveys 5000 random households to collect various health information to assess the general health status of the population of Hawaii. Additionally, demographic information, such as ethnicity, gender, geography, and ages is available. For this study, questions about chronic pelvic pain, diagnosis, ethnicity, and impact on work productivity will be submitted and added to the survey. By knowing the prevalence of chronic pelvic pain amongst different ethnicities, physicians may be able to better direct future investigations and treatments.
