This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Postdoctoral researchers represent a very important component in any active research community. As such, one of goals of our proposal is to increase the number of postdoctoral fellows within the COBRE CSFN for the express purpose of increasing research capacity and competitiveness . These postdoctoral positions have been funded either directly through salary support included in the Administrative Core or indirectly, through sub-project or start-up funding provided to COBRE investigators. As these postdoctoral positions are typically in the laboratories of more senior investigators, their presence has advantageously provided a strategy to both help maintain their competitiveness, as well as more closely link these productive researchers to the COBRE program. In this respect, it has enhanced the role that these individuals play in mentoring within the Center. It is anticipated that as these young scientists progresses they will also seek independent funding, such as from the NIH NRSA program Significantly, the presence of the COBRE Center and the resource infrastructure it has provided has had a marked impact on the quantity and quality of postdoctoral researchers that we have been able to recruit to Montana and work with CSFN investigators.
