This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Outreach Program is multi-faceted, offering: 1) a summer research program for undergraduate students from underrepresented minority groups and non-network institutions; 2) fellowships for minority graduate students and visiting faculty from the minority serving institutions; 3) a seminar series; and 4) biannual retreats for Network participants. We continue recruiting students for the summer research program, and as a result have begun to see an increase in the number and quality of applicants from underrepresented minority groups. The research opportunities for undergraduate students were advertised nationally through the RI-INBRE web site, presentations at summer job and internship fairs, and internet job posting services at various institutions of higher education. In response, 9 applications were received and 7 students (5 females and 2 males) were accepted into the Program. These students were from the University of Rhode Island, Brown University, Northeastern University, Simmons College, Southern University and A&M College, and the University of Miami. We have successfully formed a collaboration with the University of Miami, which is expected to produce numerous applicants in future years, and have made great progress in recruiting from the Community College of Rhode Island, a non-network institution. Among other training activities, ten seminars were presented. Visiting speakers from around the country spent the day with faculty and graduate students, culminating with a research seminar presentation. The annual Winter Retreat was held on January 27, 2006 at Providence College. A total of 69 individuals connected with RI-INBRE attended the retreat. The four new investigators made platform presentations. In addition, 14 posters were presented by continuing investigators and their students. The event presented an opportunity for the investigators and their students to share research findings and foster collaboration.
